# Actions

Actions are what PLAY does in response to a gesture, a timeline moment, or a progression change. Every action type, in one place.

An **Action** is what PLAY does when something happens in a playable. Change scenes, show a layer, play a sound, update a score, send the user to the store.

The same action dropdown appears everywhere PLAY can react to an event:

* [Interactions](/play/properties/interactions.md), when a user taps, swipes or drags a layer
* Layer **On Finish**, when a layer reaches the end of its time on the timeline
* Scene **On finish** and [Scene Events](/play/layers/scenes/scene-events.md)
* The [Global Timer](/play/settings/global-timer.md), when it runs out
* Progression [Triggers](/play/settings/progression/triggers.md) and [Conditionals](/play/settings/progression/conditionals.md)

A few actions are left out of some dropdowns where they would not make sense. Each action's page lists where it is available.

### Choosing an Action

The dropdown is split into four groups:

* **Do Nothing** clears the action.
* **Scene actions** control playback: Start Next Scene, Start Random Scene, Skip Time, Play Scene, Pause Scene and Restart Scene.
* **Layer and logic actions** change what is on screen and in your variables: Show Layer, Hide Layer, Update Progression, Conditional and Trigger Audio.
* **Outbound actions** leave the playable or call out of it: Launch URL, Fire Tracker and Call Number.

{% hint style="info" %}
Each action slot holds one action. To run several actions from the same gesture, add several interactions with that gesture. They run in list order.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.craftsmanplus.com/play/general/actions.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
