# Update Progression

Change a progression variable's value with a math operation whenever an action fires.

<figure><img src="https://3019081569-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZBycFFNxrdS0X9OsGtmT%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8a7cbaecd940c30244e7791b5f762bf733af3d53%2Factions-update-progression.png?alt=media" alt="The Interaction Properties popup with the Update Progression action selected"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The **Update Progression** action changes a [variable](/play/settings/progression/variables.md)'s value when it fires. It's the write side of the progression system: interactions update variables, and [triggers](/play/settings/progression/triggers.md) react to the results.

Attach it to a tap to award points, to a wrong answer to cost a life, or to any other action slot in your project.

### How it Works

When you select **Update Progression** as an action, you configure three things:

* **Variable** selects which progression variable to change.
* **Operator** selects the math applied to it:
  * **Increase by** (default)
  * **Reduce by**
  * **Multiply by**
  * **Divide by**
  * **Set to**
* **Value** is the number the operator applies. Defaults to **1**.

When the action fires, the operator and value are applied to the variable. For example, Increase by 5 adds 5 to the current value, Multiply by 2 doubles it, and Set to 0 resets it regardless of what it was.

A **Go to Progression** shortcut in the action configuration jumps straight to the [Progression](/play/settings/progression.md) settings, so you can add or check variables without leaving your setup.

### Where You Can Use It

**Update Progression** is available anywhere actions are, including:

* Interactions like [Single Tap](/play/properties/interactions/gestures/single-tap.md)
* Scene events
* Video or Sequence **On Finish**
* [Trigger](/play/settings/progression/triggers.md) actions, so one variable hitting a threshold can update another

### Common Patterns

* **Award points**: a tappable coin with Single Tap, updating Score with **Increase by** 10.
* **Cost a life**: a wrong-answer hotspot updating Health with **Reduce by** 1.
* **Score multiplier**: a bonus pickup updating Score with **Multiply by** 2.
* **Reset**: a replay button updating Score with **Set to** 0.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.craftsmanplus.com/play/general/actions/update-progression.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
