# Opacity

<figure><img src="https://3019081569-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FZBycFFNxrdS0X9OsGtmT%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8c50a8cdab45a8557b44e8b90c14d794fdfb224c%2Feffects-opacity-settings.png?alt=media" alt="An Opacity module in the Effects section with its Effect Properties popup open"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

The **Opacity** effect controls a layer's transparency. Set a value from **0%** to **100%**: at 0% the layer renders fully transparent, at 100% fully opaque, and values in between render proportionally.

Use Opacity to fade background art behind foreground content, build ghosted or inactive UI states, or soften a layer without editing the source asset.

***

#### Adding an Opacity Effect

Add an Opacity effect from the **Effects** section of the layer's Properties Panel, the same way as any other effect. See [Effects](/play/properties/effects.md) for the full add, configure, and remove flow.

The Opacity effect has a single setting: the opacity percentage, from 0 to 100.

***

#### How Opacity Combines

The Opacity effect is a multiplier on top of everything else affecting the layer's transparency, rather than a replacement for it.

* **The layer's own settings.** Opacity from the effect multiplies with any transparency the layer already has, like a shape's fill opacity. A shape with a 50% fill opacity and a 50% Opacity effect renders at roughly 25%.
* **Animations.** Animations that change transparency, like Blink and Fade, scale from the layer's effective opacity instead of overriding it. A Fade In on a layer with a 60% Opacity effect fades up to 60%, not to fully opaque.
* **Other effects.** Opacity fades everything else on the layer together, including a [Color Overlay](/play/properties/effects/color-overlay.md) or [Color Underlay](/play/properties/effects/color-underlay.md).
* **Blend Mode.** On a layer with a [Blend Mode](/play/properties/effects/blend-mode.md) effect, Opacity sets how strongly the layer blends with what's beneath it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.craftsmanplus.com/play/properties/effects/opacity.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
