# Progress Text

The Progress Text component tracks a variable and renders it as live-updating text. Use it to display a score counter, remaining moves, a countdown number, or a percentage — anywhere the user should see the actual value rather than (or alongside) a visual bar.

The number itself is a Text child layer inside the component. Hover the layer in the Layers panel and click **Edit** to select it and style the font, size, color, and alignment like any other text.

### Choosing What to Track

The **Track** dropdown at the top of the Component section selects the variable the text follows:

* **Scene Duration** (default) — tracks the time elapsed in the current scene.
* **Global Timer** — follows the project-wide [Global Timer](/play/settings/global-timer.md). Only listed when the Global Timer is enabled.
* **Progression variables** — custom variables defined in your project's [Progression](/play/settings/progression.md) settings.
* **Game variables** — Score, Moves, Health, or other variables owned by a Game layer in the same scene.

### Component Options

* **Min** and **Max** set the display range. Defaults are **0** and **100**. The displayed value is clamped to this range. The fields are hidden when tracking Scene Duration or the Global Timer, since the range comes from the timer itself. Max must be greater than or equal to Min. Each accepts any value from **-999,999** to **999,999**; entries beyond that are clamped to the nearest allowed value.
* **Fill Speed** controls how the text counts toward a new value: **Slow**, **Fast** (default), or **Instant**.
* **Invert Value** makes the text count down from Max instead of up — it displays the remaining amount rather than the current amount. Default is **off**.
* **Show Max** appends the maximum to the display, formatted as `value / max`. Default is **off**.
* **Show Percent** adds a `%` sign after the value. Default is **off**.
* **Show Commas** groups digits with commas every three places (e.g., `1,500`). Default is **off**.
* **Decimal Places** sets how many decimals to show: 0 (default), 1, 2, or 3.

In the editor the text shows a static placeholder value; use the Preview to watch it track live values. Pair it with a [Progress Bar](/play/layers/components/progress-bar.md) tracking the same variable for a complete meter-plus-number display.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.craftsmanplus.com/play/layers/components/progress-text.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
