# Edit Controls

The Edit Controls menu groups the core actions for working with layers in your project: copying, cutting, pasting, duplicating, and deleting. Every action also has a keyboard shortcut, so once you know them you can work without opening the menu at all.

Each action works on a single selected layer or on several layers selected at once.

***

#### Copy

Copies the selected layer (or layers) to your clipboard and leaves the original in place. Once copied, you can paste the layer back into the same project or into another project you have open.

**Shortcut:** `⌘C (Mac), Ctrl+C (Windows)`

***

#### Cut

Removes the selected layer (or layers) from the canvas and places it on your clipboard, ready to paste somewhere else. Use Cut when you want to move a layer rather than leave a copy behind.

**Shortcut:** `⌘X (Mac), Ctrl+X (Windows)`

***

#### Paste

Places the contents of your clipboard into the project. Pasted layers keep all of their settings, so this is the quickest way to reuse a setup you have already built.

You can paste into the same project, or into another project open in a separate browser tab. Pasting between projects works only when both projects are the **same type**:

* Playable into Playable
* Banner into Banner

Pasting between different project types, such as a Playable into a Banner, is not allowed. When you try, the paste is blocked and a toast lets you know.

If a pasted layer refers to a scene or layer that does not exist in the destination project, the paste still goes through, but the layer appears as deleted until its reference can be resolved in the new project.

{% hint style="info" %}
*To paste only certain settings from a copied layer, rather than the whole layer, use* [*Paste Properties*](/play/general/edit-controls/paste-properties.md)*.*
{% endhint %}

**Shortcut:** `⌘V (Mac), Ctrl+V (Windows)`

***

#### Duplicate

Creates a copy of the selected layer (or layers) in the same project. Duplicate does not use your clipboard, so it will not overwrite anything you have already copied.

**Shortcut:** `⌘D (Mac), Ctrl+D (Windows)`

***

#### Delete

Removes the selected layer (or layers) from the project.

**Shortcut:** `Delete or Backspace (Mac and Windows)`

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.craftsmanplus.com/play/general/edit-controls.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
